Common Questions About Information Access
An information access request enables you to:
- Obtain government-held documents and records.
- View personal data the government has collected about you, including your immigration history and documentation.
Anyone can submit an information request, regardless of citizenship status. This includes citizens, permanent residents, corporations, and even individuals currently residing outside of Canada.
You may request:
- Your own personal data held by government agencies.
- Government documents such as policy papers, internal communications, and official reports. Note that some limitations apply to sensitive information concerning national security or personal privacy of others.
Government agencies are legally required to respond within 30 calendar days for standard requests. However, they may extend this timeframe for complex requests or those involving extensive documentation.
Immigration record requests (commonly called GCMS requests) are simply a specific type of information request directed to immigration authorities like IRCC or CBSA. While they follow the same legal framework, they’re colloquially referred to differently due to their specialized nature.
We employ advanced security protocols and encryption technology to safeguard all submitted personal information. Your privacy and data security are our highest priorities throughout the entire request process.
Refunds are available for requests that haven’t yet entered the processing phase. Once your request has been marked as ‘Processing,’ ‘Ready for Download,’ or ‘Completed,’ refunds are no longer available. Most approved refunds are completed within one business day.
Our service can assist you in identifying the appropriate government department based on your specific information needs. We’ll help ensure your request reaches the correct agency the first time.
